7 New Year Wine Resolutions

While some people are making boring resolutions about getting their finances or body into shape, you can make a far more important change in your life. These resolutions all involve wine so what could be more important? Become the true wine connoisseur you have always wanted to be with these resolutions.

1. Try a New Varietal

If you usually stick to one or two varietals, open your mind to trying something different. If you don’t usually choose a Merlot, do yourself a favour and try one for a change. Even better, when you are ordering wine online, select your favourite winemaker and buy one of everything. Conduct a tasting and compare notes on each bottle.

2. Wise up on Wine

If you like to talk about wine but can’t find the right words to describe the flavours and aromas, do some further study. Not just drink more but also read more. Check out the wine bottle labels, tasting notes, join a winery mailing list, read reviews and blogs, watch video reviews and listen carefully to the language used at your next tasting. If you’re really serious, you could do a wine appreciation course to swat up on the lingo and learn all there is to know about wine.

3. Do More Wine Tastings

Make it your mission to do at least one wine tasting per month. You can make a weekend of it and stay in Margaret River or take a Sunday drive to your local winery. Once a year, get a group of friends or colleagues together and organise a bus for a group tasting event.

4. Drink Better Quality

Quality is always better than quantity. Rather than buying six bottles of wine choose a few good quality ones and really savour the taste. If one of your other resolutions was to lose weight, then this change will suit you perfectly; less wine equals fewer calories.

5. Support Local Wineries

We’re always told to support local business and wine is no different. Western Australia makes world-quality wines, so there is no need to order wine online from outside the state. Make a weekend of it and take a trip to Margaret River to show your support to the skilled viticulturists, winemakers and restaurateurs.

6. Food and Wine Pairings

Too many people spoil the taste of a good wine because they pair it with the wrong foods. Once you have decided what you are eating for dinner, do a quick search on the type of wine that best suits the meal. Or if you have your priorities right, choose the wine first and then decide on what meal you will prepare.

7. Keep Notes

If you find it hard to remember which wine you really enjoyed last month (or last week) write it down! Keep a few notes on what it was you liked about the wine and soon you will be able to make a quick purchase than wandering aimlessly around the online wine store.

With wine there is always something new to experience and learn. Make this the year you take your wine appreciation to the next level.
